Privacy policy
What The Total Tubist collects, why, and what you can do about it.
This policy covers The Total Tubist app for iPhone and iPad and this website. “We” and “us” means The Total Tubist. “You” means anyone who uses the app.
The short version
- We collect what we need to run your account, track your practice, and show your lessons.
- Your recordings stay on your device. The PDFs you add to My Music and your markings are stored in your private account so they sync between your devices. Only you can see them.
- There are no ads in the app. We don’t sell your data or share it for advertising.
- Students under 13 can use the app but cannot see or post on the community board.
- You can delete your account and its data at any time from inside the app.
What we collect
Account information
When you sign up we ask for your name, email address, and a password, and we ask you to confirm whether you are 13 or older. That answer decides what parts of the app you can use. Passwords are handled by our sign-in provider and are never stored in readable form.
Practice data
The practice sessions you log: when you practiced, for how long, and details you choose to add, such as the piece you worked on and journal notes. This powers your history, stats, streaks, and achievements.
Lesson progress
Which lessons and masterclasses you have completed, so the app can show your progress.
Leaderboards and studios
If you opt in to a leaderboard, the nickname you choose and your weekly practice time are shown to other users on that board. If you join a studio, your teacher and studio members can see your studio progress.
Community posts
If you are a Participant or Pro member aged 13 or older, the posts and replies you write on the community board, and any reports you file about other posts.
Feature requests and support messages
Ideas you send through the app and emails you send to support, along with the contact details you include.
Your music
The PDFs you add to My Music, their names, folders, and favorites, and your markings on them and on lesson PDFs. We store these in your private account so they sync between your devices. Only you can see them.
Lessons, masterclasses, and recording feedback
Private lesson requests and bookings, masterclasses you say you’re attending or enter to perform in, and, for Pro members, the recordings you submit and the teacher comments on them.
Purchases
Whether you have Free, Basic, Participant, or Pro. Apple processes in-app payments. Founding member plans bought on our website are processed by Stripe, which collects your payment details and the shipping address and shirt size for your Founding Member T-shirt, and gives us your email, plan, shipping address, and shirt size. We never see your card number.
What stays on your device
These are stored only on your iPhone or iPad and are never uploaded to us:
- Recordings you make in the recorder or mock audition, and comments and markers on them.
- Videos you record over your music, which are saved to your Photos.
- Mock audition lists.
The tuner and recorder use your microphone. Sound from the microphone is processed on your device and is not sent to us. Because this data lives only on your device, deleting the app deletes it, and we cannot recover it. The one exception: if you are a Pro member and submit a recording for feedback, that audio or video file is uploaded to our servers so our teachers can listen and comment on it.
How we use it
- To create and secure your account and let you sign in.
- To show your practice history, stats, streaks, achievements, and leaderboards.
- To give you the lessons and features your plan includes.
- To run and moderate the community board.
- To answer support requests and decide what to build next.
- To send account and service emails, such as password resets, lesson confirmations, recording feedback, and masterclass results and reminders. We don’t send marketing email without asking first.
We do not show ads, we do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.
Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers to run the app. They handle data on our behalf and only for these purposes:
| Provider | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database and sign-in | Your account, practice, lesson progress, leaderboard, studio, and community data, your My Music files and markings, and recordings you submit for feedback |
| Mux | Lesson video streaming | Playback information needed to stream video to your device, such as IP address and device type |
| Apple | Purchases and subscriptions | Apple handles payment under its own privacy policy; we receive confirmation of what you bought |
| Stripe | Founding member payments on our website | Your payment details, email, shipping address, and shirt size. Stripe handles payment under its own privacy policy |
| Resend | Email delivery | Your email address, to send messages like password resets, lesson confirmations, and masterclass results |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users. If The Total Tubist is ever sold or transferred, your information would go with it under this policy, and we would tell you first.
The community board
The community board is open only to Participant and Pro members aged 13 and older. What you post there can be seen by other members of the board, so think before you share. You may share your own phone number or email address in a post if you want to; never post anyone else’s personal information without their permission. Posts are moderated. We may remove posts that break our community guidelines, and we review posts that members report.
Children under 13
Many tuba students are young, and they are welcome in the app. We follow the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):
- At sign-up we ask each user to confirm they are 13 or older. Anyone who doesn’t confirm is treated as under 13.
- Users under 13 have no access to the community board. They cannot read, post, or reply there.
- For users under 13, we collect only what is needed to run the account and the practice features described above.
- A parent or guardian can ask to review or delete their child’s information at any time by emailing support@thetotaltubist.com. We will verify that you are the parent before acting on the request.
If you believe a child under 13 has given us information they shouldn’t have, email us and we will delete it.
[Lawyer: confirm whether verifiable parental consent is needed for under-13 accounts given the data collected, including leaderboard nicknames and studio membership.]
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while your account is open. To delete your account and the data we hold for it, go to Profile › Account › Delete account in the app, or email support@thetotaltubist.com. Deletion is permanent. Copies in our providers’ backups are removed on their regular backup schedule. [Lawyer: confirm backup retention period.]
Deleting your account does not cancel a Participant or Pro subscription, which Apple manages. Cancel it in your Apple ID settings.
Security
Data travels between the app and our servers over encrypted connections. Access to your data on our servers is restricted by account, so other users can’t read your private practice records. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you promptly if a breach affects your information.
Your choices
- Edit your name in the app at any time.
- Leaderboards are opt-in, and you can leave them.
- Turn reminders off in Profile.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, a correction, or deletion by emailing support.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or state privacy laws. Email us to use them.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above and tell you in the app before major changes take effect.
